Often referred to as the "Hidden Valley," this region preserves deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist customs, visible in its ancient monasteries, intricately carved prayer stones (Mani walls), and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the wind. As you move through settlements like Chumling, Chhokangparo, and Nile, you’ll have time to adjust to the elevation. A side trip to the renowned Mu Gompa Monastery offers further cultural insight.

After traversing the Tsum Valley, the route reconnects with the main Manaslu Circuit via Nubri Valley. From there, the trail progresses through Sama Gaun, Samdo, and Dharmsala, leading toward the high mountain passes of the Manaslu region. The highlight comes at Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), where panoramic views of the surrounding peaks unfold. The trek gradually descends through Bhimtang, concluding in Dharapani.

This route stands out for its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, offering a more secluded experience compared to other popular treks. It provides an authentic glimpse into Nepal’s high-altitude trekking culture while following a less-traveled path.

Additionally, the Manaslu Circuit features teahouse lodging, built-in rest days for acclimatization, and a quieter trail environment, making it ideal for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.

Highlights:

  • Discover the isolated and exotic Tsum Valley, recently opened to foreign hikers in 2008
  • Explore Tibetan Buddhism in this region through ancient monasteries, mani walls, and prayer flags as you pass traditional villages on your way to the remote Mu Gompa Monastery.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary

01 DAY

Kathmandu to Maccha Khola

Your Manaslu journey typically begins with an early morning departure from Kathmandu, either by jeep or bus. The route follows the scenic Budhi Gandaki River Valley, winding through traditional villages, rolling hills, and breathtaking mountain vistas before arriving at Maccha Khola River—the official starting point of the trek. The road is narrow and uneven, curving up and down along the steep slopes above a deep gorge, making for a somewhat bumpy ride. As you leave behind the bustle of the capital, the landscape gradually shifts to reveal terraced farmland, gentle hills, and remote rural settlements. This transition marks the first glimpse of Manaslu’s striking natural charm.

Trek from Maccha Khola to JagatTrek

Today begins your trekking journey along the Budhi Gandaki River. As you make your way forward, you'll encounter stunning views of deep river gorges and cross several suspension bridges. Along the route, you’ll pass through traditional settlements like Khorlabesi and Tatopani. The path then winds through a narrow river gorge, where the soothing sounds of flowing water accompany you until you reach the village of Jagat. Here, your trekking permits will be stamped for the first time.

Trek Duration: 6–7 hours

Max Altitude: 1,340 m Teahouse / Local Lodge
03 DAY

Trek from Jagat to Lokpa

This morning, you’ll depart from the Manaslu Circuit route, leaving it to continue winding through forested and rocky slopes, and head instead toward the more secluded and less frequented paths of the Tsum Valley. Lokpa marks the entrance to this elongated, narrow valley region, offering an even more remote and genuine Himalayan trekking experience compared to the journey toward Manaslu.

Trekking duration: 6–7 hours

Max Altitude: 2,240 m Teahouse / Local Lodge
04 DAY

Trek from Lokpa to Chumling

The hike today is relatively easy, leading you through the remote Tsum Valley toward the village of Chumling. Along the trail and in the small mountain settlements, you’ll encounter rich expressions of traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture. Should time allow, a visit to Chumling’s local monastery offers deeper insight, making this an ideal day to begin exploring the distinctive heritage of this secluded valley.

Trek Duration: 4–5 hours

Max Altitude: 2,386 m Teahouse / Local Lodge
05 DAY

Teahouse / Local Lodge

Today’s trek goes above the 3,000-metre mark, where the valley widens into expansive basins that, on clear days, provide stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Chhokangparo. 06 DAY

Trek from Chhokangparo to Nile

The path continues farther into the upper Tsum Valley, winding through settlements that reflect a deep Tibetan influence in their buildings, customs, and daily life. Hike: 5–6 hrs

Max Altitude: 3,361 m Teahouse / Local Lodge
07 DAY

Acclimatization Day at Nile – Optional Hike to Mu Gompa

Today is intended for acclimatization in preparation for the higher altitudes ahead. Afterward, you’ll make your way back down to Nile for the night, following the principle of ascending during the day and descending before sleep.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours (optional)

Max Altitude: 3,700 m Teahouse / Local Lodge (Nile)
08 DAY

Trek from Nile to Chumling

Today, you’ll be making your way back from Tsum Valley toward Chumling. The descent is considerably easier than the climb up, allowing for a more relaxed pace. Essential Information

Why Choose the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek combines two distinct Himalayan journeys into one experience. In the first part, you’ll explore the Tsum Valley, immersing yourself in its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. As the trek progresses into the Manaslu Circuit, you’ll cross the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, where breathtaking mountain views await.
This trek offers a unique opportunity to discover the remarkable scenery and traditional culture of the high Himalayas. Merging two adventures into one, it creates a memorable and enriching experience for travelers in Nepal. Compared to more popular routes, this trail sees fewer visitors, offering a quieter and more secluded hiking experience.

Tsum Valley – The Hidden Valley

For many years, Tsum Valley remained off-limits to foreign trekkers until it opened in 2008. Renowned for its deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist traditions and preserved way of life, the valley offers a glimpse into a timeless culture. Visitors encounter ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, intricate mani walls, and historic villages that leave a lasting impression. Exploring settlements like Chumling, Chhokangparo, Nile, and Mu Gompa provides a rare chance to immerse oneself in cultural heritage found nowhere else.

Larkya La Pass Experience

At 5,160 meters, Larkya La Pass is the highest point of the trek and one of the most rewarding mountain passes in Nepal. The views from this vantage point are extraordinary. After climbing up to the pass, one can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the surrounding Himalayan peaks before beginning their descent into Bhimtang.

Acclimatization and Altitude

The trip includes acclimatization days at Nile and Samdo to allow your body to adjust to the altitude. We also offer the option to hike up to Mu Gompa and Rui La, which are excellent options for ascending higher during the day and descending to sleep at a lower altitude.

Accommodation During the Trek

During the trip, you'll stay in traditional tea houses and local lodges, with basic amenities becoming more modest as the elevation increases and the journey progresses. This offers a genuine Himalayan trekking experience.

Trek Difficulty

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit Trek can be defined as a serious trek with huge altitude gains and losses, long hikes through remote mountain wilderness, and crossing high mountain passes, among which the most notable is the Larkya La Pass, which requires a certain level of fitness to be conquered.

Best Time to Trek

The most favorable times to trek the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit are from September to November and March to May, as these periods typically offer clearer mountain views and more stable weather conditions for hiking.

Required Permits

To undertake the Manaslu Trek, you must obtain four permits:

- Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP)
- Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Physical Preparation

Getting ready for this trek requires advance planning to build adequate fitness. A training period of three to four months is recommended, focusing on cardiovascular endurance, hill and stair climbing, strength exercises, and multi-day hiking experience.

Yes. A standard Manaslu Circuit Trek typically takes 12–14 days and skips the Tsum Valley section, rejoining the main trail at Deng.

Accommodation is provided in teahouses and basic local lodges throughout the trek. Facilities become more basic at higher elevations, and services such as hot showers may be available for an additional charge.

Autumn, from September to November, is considered the ideal time for hiking, offering pleasant weather and clear mountain views. Spring, between March and May, is another excellent season for trekking in Nepal, featuring mild conditions and vibrant rhododendron blooms.

Solo trekkers can apply for the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit individually, but a licensed guide is still legally required throughout the trek.
